StarFall

When my daughter was 2 1/2 years old I taught her how to use a mouse. I then set her loose on starfall.com. It is full of learning activities for kids. My daughter knew all of her letters and sounds long before she was 3, thanks to this site.

Starfall also has Learn-to-Read phonics books that you can purchase to help your child's reading skills develop even further.

IDEAS FOR TEACHING BIG AND LITTLE

1. Get a big ball (maybe an exercise ball or a large beach ball) and a small ball (marble or bouncy ball). Teach your child which is big and which is little. Sing the "big and little" song: (sing to the tune of twinkle twinkle little star)

Big, little, big, little,
big, little, big little,
This is big and this is little
This is big and this is little

The repetition of this song will help your child grasp the concept. Test your child's listening skills by then asking, "Which ball is big?" "Which ball is little?" and praising him when he gives you the right answer, "Yes, this ball is big!" etc.

2. Gather a bunch of big and little items. Have your child sort them by size (big items in one pile, small items in another).

3. Use play-doh (to make your own click here) and make big circles and little circles together.

4. Go outside and show your child all of the big things (trees, house, mountain etc.). Show him all of the little things (bugs, rocks, flowers, dirt etc.). Have him point out some big and little things.

5. Sort your child's stuffed animals into groups of big and little. Talk about which animals are big and which are small (elephanats and mice, whales and small fish, dinosaurs and spiders; sing The Eency Weency Spider etc.).

10. Talk about giants and midgets. Tell story of David and Goliath or Jack and the Beanstock . Read the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs .

11. Search around your home or classroom for big and little items.  Have child sort these items, putting the big items in a big box or bin and the little items into a small box, tuperware or basket.

12. Make bean bags of different sizes.  Have child toss big bean bags into a big box and little bean bags into a little box.  OR you could make a big and little circle out of tape on the floor and have them toss them into the circles.  Have child line bean bags up from biggest to smallest.

13. Have child play with a Rock-A-Stack toy teaching them to put the biggest circle on first followed by the next biggest etc.

14. There are workbooks that you can get at the dollar store or other stores that have activities where your child can pick out the biggest item on a page etc.

15. People are different sizes.  Show the children a baby or a picture of a baby with a mommy.  She the child how the baby is little and the mommy is big.  Compare hand sizes, foot sizes, height, fingers & toes, head etc.  You could do the same for baby animals verses grow animals.  Examples: a puppy and a dog, a kitten and a cat etc.  Which is bigger?  Which is smaller?

1. Get a long string and a short string. Sing the song in the #1 except replace "big and little" with "long and short".
